A diplomatic row erupted after Kolkata Police stopped and attempted to search the official vehicle of the Russian Consul General, prompting a strong objection from the Russian side. The incident quickly escalated, with a formal complaint lodged with India’s Ministry of External Affairs, raising concerns over adherence to diplomatic protocol.
According to established international norms under the Vienna Convention, vehicles of foreign diplomats are granted special privileges and are not subject to routine checks or searches. The Russian authorities termed the action inappropriate and flagged it as a violation of diplomatic immunity.
